The exhibition was opened by Sir Hugh Casson, President of the Royal Academy, and it included some spectacular marine paintings from the Tate Gallery, the Royal Collection and the National Maritime Museum  as well as fine watercolours by Bonington, Carmichael, Cotman, David Cox, De Wint and Turner from the Whitworth Art Gallery, the Laing Art Gallery, Norwich Castle Museum and various private collections.
